Before this popular Sunset Strip comedy club appeared on the scene in 1972, it was Ciro’s restaurant, one of Hollywood’s hippest clubs during the 1940s and ’50s. Its owners had a close affiliation with the mob and the building still has peepholes in the upper walls of the main room that once allowed mobsters to see who was coming and going. Mickey “The King of the Sunset Strip” Cohen used the club as his base of operations. “West Hollywood was a gangster-run place with gun fights in the streets,” says Carradine.

Police surmised that she climbed a workman’s ladder to the top of the 45-foot letter “H” and jumped to her death. Visitors to the area say they still see the actress haunting the sign, and sometimes pick up the scent of her gardenia perfume.

John Hampton opened the theater in 1942 and dedicated his life to preserving silent films… using toxic chemicals that eventually gave him cancer. Lawrence Austin reopened the theater after Hampton’s death in the early nineties; in 1997, he was fatally shot in the lobby in a plot concocted by his lover/projectionist. There are also the usual lights going on and off and mysterious footsteps. Peg Entwistle is probably the most famous failed actress in Los Angeles history. Depressed by her lack of success, she jumped from the Hollywood Sign’s “H” to her death in September 1932. People have reported seeing a woman near the sign matching Entwistle’s description and dressed in period clothes; some people say they’ve seen a female figure actually making the jump.

And, last but by no means least, make sure to check out Scare X Studios a very 2021, social-media-ready interactive experience of illusions where you’ll become the star of your very own horror movie. The Mayhem Museum is the first of the four haunted attractions at the House of Horror Haunted Carnival.
The part-interactive, part-theatrical performance experience takes place in a 10,000 square-foot mansion with a group limited to just 18 guests. Each session is two hours long and includes passed appetizers and drinks. The Willows is the brainchild of the people behind Creep LA and has become such a popular production and tickets sell out quickly every year. Children ages two and under enter free to the carnival, but are not permitted to the haunted houses.
The festival will be family friendly during the day and turn into one geared towards adults at night. Technically, every day is Halloween at BeetleHouse, a Tim Burton-themed bar in Hollywood, but Halloween weekend is certainly a good excuse to finally check out this spot and hang out with Beetlejuice.
